Chains, deprivation for mentally ill in Ghana

The report describes how thousands of people with mental disabilities are often forced to live in unsanitary, overcrowded psychiatric hospitals against their will.

In some of the spiritual healing centres mentally ill people were often chained to trees in the baking sun, denied medication and forced to fast as part of a ‘healing process’.

“The government needs to take immediate steps to end abuses against people with mental disabilities in institutions, prayer camps, and the community,” the author said in an accompanying media release.
