Chemist Warehouse referred for ‘deceptive and misleading conduct’

Chemist Warehouse is under fire after the Victorian branch of the Pharmacy Guild and National Pharmacies wrote to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) criticising the way the group advertises 'discounts' on its sales receipts.

The discount chain prints a sum consumers have 'saved' on dockets, which Victorian Pharmacy Guild head Anthony Tassone says is "deceptive and misleading" since "most therapeutic goods... do not have a recommended retail price".

The guild’s letter to the ACCC, which has been seen by MO, said: "When asked what this meant on the receipt, a sales assistant at the Chemist Warehouse store in question replied something to the effect of ‘this is what you saved compared to shopping at another pharmacy'."

The guild said the claim was not based on evidence and called on the ACCC to investigate Chemist Warehouse as a "matter of urgency".
