Chronic disease rebate overhaul vital: RACGP

A complete reworking of chronic disease management MBS items joins rebates for voluntary patient registration and general practice Point of Care Testing (PoCT) at the top of the RACGP’s federal budget wishlist.

With the Gillard government just three months out from handing down the final budget of its current term in government, the college has called for chronic disease MBS items to be reworked to include an initial ‘chronic disease assessment’ item – worth up to $175.95 – to cover the time taken for GPs to determine a patient’s healthcare needs.

In its federal budget submission, the college has proposed that the new items – which would be time-based – would include time taken to collect patient information, update and make edits to patient records, undertake further examinations, initiating referrals and interventions as needed, a final determination as to the extent of the patient’s overall healthcare
