Codeine move 'will mean 8,700,000 extra GP visits per year'

THE move to make codeine prescription-only will mean about 334 extra consultations for the average GP each year, according to a report commissioned by the Pharmacy Guild.

All codeine products, including many popular over-the-counter cough and cold relief medications, will move behind the counter from next June under an interim TGA decision handed down last month.

Drawing on consumer survey data and MBS statistics, Cadence Economics estimates the move will result in an additional 8.7 million GP visits per year.
