Co-payment in limbo

While Prime Minister Tony Abbott insists the government is still committed to all its budget measures, senior ministers on Wednesday emerged from direct talks with the opposition with a deal to hold back unpopular welfare reforms such as a rise in the pension age, enabling the government to hurry welfare cuts worth $2.7 billion over four years into the House on Thursday.

In this scenario of tactical retreat, Health Minister Peter Dutton reportedly dropped a plan to put the controversial co-payment legislation before parliament this week.
