Co-payment will send patients to ED instead

The hefty price tag, touted by shadow health minister Catherine King, is calculated on her SA counterpart’s suggestion that patients seeking to avoid GP co-payments would flood hospital emergency departments causing waiting times to blow out.

SA Health Minister Jack Snelling warned last week that just a 4% rise in patients seeking treatment from the state’s EDs would equate to 360,000 additional ED patients and would more than triple average wait times from 20 to 66 minutes.
