Court clears GP who mistook melanoma for a wart

A GP who diagnosed a malignant melanoma as a plantar wart did not breach his duty of care, despite the cancer metastasising and the patient dying shortly afterwards, an appeal court has ruled.

Dr Steven Kelly, a GP in Newcastle, NSW, was originally sued by his former patient Malcolm Coote for diagnosing a planter wart, after Mr Coote found a growth on his foot about 3mm wide and 1-2mm thick, which felt like a pebble in his shoe.

It was an acral lentiginous melanoma, which account for 1-3% of all melanomas in Australia.
