Di Natale wants tougher regulation for sports scientists

The recommendations from Greens senator and former GP Dr Richard Di Natale were included in a senate inquiry report released last week calling for ongoing accreditation of sports scientists by an appropriate body.

Senator Di Natale also suggested that once a “tiered system of accreditation for sports scientists in Australia” had been established, that the government should consider including relevant sports science disciplines in AHPRA’s national registration scheme.

The Senate inquiry examined the role of sports scientists in the wake of recent allegations of systemic doping and potentially illegal supplement programs being administered at professional sporting clubs.

The role of sports scientists within such programs has been questioned as the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) continues to investigate activities at clubs in both the National Rugby League (NRL) and Australian Football League (AFL) competitions.
