Don’t force flu vax on health workers: experts
Leading immunisation researcher Professor Robert Booy and colleagues said that unlike other compulsory vaccines the effectiveness of flu vaccine was less certain.
Professor Booy, head of clinical research at the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance (NCIRS), Sydney, said a mandate could fail in the absence of good infrastructure.
“We are concerned that influenza vaccination uptake is poor in healthcare workers and needs improvement,” the researchers wrote in response to a call by US bioethicist Arthur Caplan for mandatory vaccination of this group.
“However, we disagree… that compulsion is required and assert that program comprehensiveness is the most important determinant of vaccination uptake in healthcare workers.
