Dr Morton awarded AM in Australia Day honours
Dr Brian Morton, chair of the AMA council of general practice, initially refused to believe he had been made a Member (AM) in the General Division.
“When you work in medico-politics you have a degree of cynicism and I didn’t really believe it was happening until it was made public,” said the Northbridge GP.
“The word people use is humbling but when I used the thesaurus it said ‘awesome’ and that’s not really a word my generation uses. But I suppose it is awesome to be recognised for the work one does and how it impacts on your time.”
Dr Morton spent Australia Day on his customary 50km cycle ride around Sydney before celebrating with family yesterday.
Dr Graham Cato, a GP in Balnarring, Victoria, was awarded the medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia for his work in community health and surf lifesaving.
