Dud deal for migrant doctors: AMA calls for overhaul

AUSTRALIA needs to scrap the 10-year moratorium on Medicare provider numbers for IMGs and give overseas-trained doctors more support, the AMA says. 

The peak doctors' group says the current policy is a poor deal for many immigrant doctors and is not in the best interests of patients in the rural and remote areas where IMGs make up some 45% of the medical workforce. 

“This policy means that IMGs are often recruited to work in some of the most professionally challenging clinical environments, despite limited preparation for this experience and more restricted access to
