End-of-life care incentives for GPs

The Grattan Institute report Dying Well said only 14% of Australians die at home, about half the rate of comparable countries, though surveys consistently show 70% hope to go out in familiar or homelike surroundings.

Authors Professor Hal Swerissen and Professor Stephen Duckett recommended requiring GPs to record their patients’ wishes for end-of-life care and investing more in community-based palliative services.

It should be “the normal expectation” that GPs raise the subject of a patient’s preferences for end-of-life
