Experts warn self-education cap will increase medico-legal issues

General counsel at medical indemnity provider Avant, Fraser Maclennan-Pike, has called on the government to “rethink” the proposed measure which would see a $2000 limit placed on tax-deductible expenses relating to professional self-education.

The warning follows the release late last week by the Treasury of a discussion paper on the change as part of a public consultation process.

Mr Maclennan-Pike said while some practitioners would be able to reduce their expenses to fit within the $2000 limit, many would not and Avant was concerned about
