Worry over “dangerously high” levels of radiation from full-body CT scans prompted NSW Health to implement a GP referral procedure in 2002.

Ten years on and the Environmental Protection Authority, the regulator of radiation in Australia, still insists on referrals from GPs as part of multi-agency efforts to reduce patient exposure to unnecessary radiation during medical imaging examinations, stating that “the procedure is inappropriate for general diagnosis of healthy individuals”.
