BEFORE the Vioxx controversy hit headlines and highlighted the potential cardiovascular side effects of COX-2 inhibitors, a US study suggested the risk of hypertension rose among women with increased use of paracetamol and NSAIDs.

On the back of the data from the Nurses Health Study II, GPs were advised by local experts to check the blood pressure of women in their 30s and 40s who took paracetamol, as was recommended for those taking NSAIDs.
