Feelgood drama that shines
This film, by Australian documentarian Kim Mordaunt — making his narrative feature debut — is the sort of film to win the hearts of adults and children alike, despite the subtitles.
Mordaunt had previously made a documentary in Laos, Bomb Harvest, about children selling unexploded munitions for scrap metal, and remnants of that film also haunt this.
Young Ahlo (street urchin Disamoe) is born under a cloud when his mother has twins. Lao tradition holds that one twin is a good omen, while the other is under a cloud.
