French govt accuses PIP company of ‘massive deception’

It calls for an overhaul of the French Agency for the Safety of Health Products (Afssaps), while confirming advice that “all women with PIP implants have them removed, as a preventive and non-urgent measure”.

“It highlights massive deception by the company PIP (Poly Implant Prothèse) – of its women victims, the health authorities and health professionals,” French Ministers of Health Xavier Bertrand and Nora Berra said, according to a translated media statement issued 1 February.

“The report also points to weaknesses in control systems and vigilance in monitoring the safety of drug and health products.

“This has led the health department to make several proposals to ministers, to better ensure in future the safety of medical devices. The Ministers of Health have adopted these proposals.”
