GP guilty of inappropriate consult with receptionist

A NSW GP has been ordered to have a chaperone present during consultations with female patients and restricted to working in a practice of no fewer than three GPs after being found guilty of unprofessional conduct.

Dr Basavaraj Vastrad was found guilty of unprofessional conduct by the NSW Medical Tribunal last month for an inappropriate consultation with his receptionist on 14 February 2008. 

The tribunal heard that Dr Vastrad, who was an employee of the Bella Vista Medical Practice in Baulkham Hills at the time, offered to see his receptionist regarding complaints that she was stressed and anxious. During the consultation Dr Vastrad instructed her to undress in order to examine her posture. According to the patient, Dr Vastrad then failed to instruct her to get dressed and conducted breathing and meditation exercises with her.
