GP waiting times to be made public knowledge
ALL Australian GP waiting times could soon be published under a proposal being considered in Victoria.
The controversial measure will be considered by a parliamentary inquiry into ways to measure primary and aged care outcomes, launched last week by the state’s Health Minister, David Davis.
The inquiry will consider “whether… Australia should mandate the provision of waiting times”, as well as ways to measure rates of treatment for the aged and chronically ill in the primary care system.
GP and AMA Victoria president Dr Harry Hemley rejected the proposal, saying that publishing waiting lists would be counter-productive, as it would likely lead to yet more bureaucracy for doctors and less time for consultations.
