GPs’ primary role to play in HIV care

MY WORK as a GP over the past 25 years has had a strong focus on the care of people with HIV. Attending the recent World AIDS Conference in Melbourne — held under the sad circumstances of several key researchers being on Malaysian Airlines flight 17 — led me to reflect on this experience and some of the key lessons I have learned.
1. HIV is a primary care condition. Most treatment and care for people with HIV can be provided by GPs
