GPs stand strong against flooding
The death toll from the floods was six at the time of press, and thousands of Bundaberg residents have been forced to evacuate as 2000 homes and 200 businesses were inundated.
Wide Bay Medicare Local (WBML) CEO Shane Dawson told MO that the medical community galvanised. WBML had the role of communication and coordination in a “joint planning” effort with each level of government, hospitals, the RACGP and other emergency authorities.
“A number of practices were affected by the floods, but stayed open despite the odds,” he said.
“Part of the recovery is to get psychological services. We plan to deliver those in the next 6–12 months and out at evacuation centres coordinating medical services”.
