HIV rapid tests in practice

Barriers to HIV testing, including access, time to results and venepuncture, may result in at-risk individuals testing infrequently, or not at all. Early diagnosis means better prognosis and decreases onward transmission. Point-of-care HIV tests (POCTs) or rapid HIV tests (RHTs) may address some of these issues.

The TGA approved an RHT for market in December, 2012. Previously, RHTs have only been approved for use in the laboratory setting as part of the HIV diagnostic algorithm.
