Hospital shooting sparks call for tougher security

AN ALLEGED attack on a doctor at a Sydney hospital followed by the shooting of a police officer and a security guard shows hospital security staff need more power at work, the Health Services Union says.

NSW branch secretary Gerard Hayes wants an urgent meeting with NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner following the shooting at Nepean Hospital overnight.

“We have been calling for more powers for hospital security officers for several years but the government has refused to do anything more than instruct our members to call the police in the event of problems at
