HPV self-sampling plan for GP clinics

GPs will be asked to offer self-sampling in the surgery if under-screened women decline an HPV DNA test that involves a speculum, as part of sweeping changes to the National Cervical Screening Program (NCSP).

A recent meta-analysis, published in The Lancet Oncology, confirms self-sampling is a valid option to reach women not participating in a regular screening program, cytologists say.

Associate Professor Marion Saville, executive director of VCS Incorporated, which provides services for the NCSP, says there is a small loss of sensitivity.
