Incentivising diagnoses is a dud scheme

This ethical foundation allows good communication, adequate history taking, accurate diagnoses and appropriate treatment. The public esteem the medical profession enjoys must be maintained. Patients may fail to trust doctors who accept pharmaceutical company gifts or who ‘dob them in’ to authorities.

In England, doctors are being offered £55 ($104) for every diagnosis of dementia. The six-month scheme recently introduced by the NHS has been criticised by doctors, advocacy groups and ethicists. The scheme has been labelled “odious” and “an intellectual and unethical travesty”.
