Incorrect weight shifting most common cause of falls in elderly

In one of the few studies to provide objective evidence of how falls occur, researchers in Canada set up video cameras in common areas in two long-term care facilities, recording 227 falls among 130 individuals.

They found incorrect weight shifting, such as while turning or sitting down, accounted for 41% of falls, followed by tripping or stumbling (21%).

The most common activities leading to falls were walking forward, standing quietly and sitting down.
