Journalist of the year award for MO reporter

Kaye took out the award, in competition with reporters from some of Australia’s best known publications, after providing leading coverage on Bahrain’s persecution of 20 doctors in the Arab Spring uprisings and on controversial northern NSW alternative therapy group Universal Medicine.

The Bahrain coverage, which included a harrowing account of a female doctor’s imprisonment for treating anti-government protesters, led to world medical authorities approaching that country’s government demanding protection and amnesty for all doctors and health workers.

Bahrain subsequently acquitted nine of the medics, freed three for time served, and upheld the convictions of six. Two more remain fugitive.
