Junk food still advertised to kids, despite regulation

CHILDREN are still being exposed to advertising of unhealthy fast foods despite an industry initiative to promote healthier choices, researchers say.

A comparison of advertisements aired before and after the start of the Quick Service Restaurant Industry (QSRI) self-regulatory policy has found no meaningful change, leading to calls for the Government to intervene.

The study, by Cancer Council NSW’s health strategies division director Kathy Chapman and fellow nutritionists, assessed all ads aired over four days on free-to-air commercial television in May 2009, and again in April 2010.
