Lose big and stop the obesity crisis
The rural Victorian town of Ararat, with a population of around 11,000, was challenged to lose a combined 26,000kg over the 12-week show schedule.
Dr Derek Pope, director at the Ararat Medical Centre, said the initial enthusiasm for the challenge waned when the film crew left town, only to be reignited by the recent broadcast of the show.
“All signs are that specific individuals who lost a lot of weight will keep it off. The long-term gain may be modest, but a 5% reduction in weight makes a significant difference to diabetes and heart disease
