Medicare Locals brand name a ‘confusing flop’

80% of 152 MO readers responding to an online poll voted in favour of renaming the fledgling organisations, which have no direct involvement with Medicare, while just 7% believed the name Medicare Local was fit for the organisations’ purpose.

The poll results follow renewed debate over the title during federal parliament’s final sitting week of the year last week as the government was forced to introduce legislation to legally enable MLs to use the term ‘Medicare’ in their operating names.

Despite the existence of 61 Medicare Locals, it remains an offence to use the word Medicare in a business context.

In what the opposition labelled an embarrassing admission by the government, Health Minister Tanya Plibersek announced that a scheduled national review of the ML program next year would assess public reaction to the name as well as whether it was ‘fit for purpose’.
