Melanoma death: GP did not order tests after skin excision

THE RACGP should consider establishing guidelines for best practice in excising skin lesions, even if clinically diagnosed as benign, following the death of a woman from metastatic melanoma, a Victorian coroner has recommended.

The Coroner, Rosemary Carlin, also recommended that the college continue to educate members about the importance of comprehensive contemporaneous clinical notes after those of Melbourne GP Dr Mark Spring were found wanting during an inquest into the death of Susan Lovell of Hawthorn East.
