Mental health profile - Dr Christine McAullife

SHE shot to prominence after quitting a government advisory group over the Better Access funding cuts – but Queensland GP Dr Christine McAuliffe has always had a passion for the intersection between mental and physical health.

And not surprisingly, that passion is the result of her work as a GP.

“In general practice, often people will present with mental health problems with a physical complaint; sometimes those with physical complaints have a higher incidence of mental health problems,” Dr McAuliffe told MO.

“It’s absolutely critical for the community and for quality care… that general practice continues to play the key role it’s played in providing quality mental health services.”

Unlike some in her position, Dr McAuliffe, an AGPN adviser for the past decade, has no regrets about the storm she created by quitting the government’s Expert Advisory Group on Mental Health in July.
