Metformin contraindications “too conservative”

The current contraindications for metformin may be too conservative say Australian researchers who found one in three patients are prescribed the drug inappropriately but without any adverse effects.

Metformin is prescribed inappropriately in almost one third of patients who are using the drug for type 2 diabetes, a study by researchers at the University of Tasmania has shown.

A review of 301 hospitalised patients taking metformin found that 31% had been prescribed the drug despite contraindications or were prescribed in excessive dosages.
