Modernisation brings an epidemic of diabetes

Hospitals are treating “an alarming caseload” of diabetes foot complications, the report says.

Amputation rates are likely higher than in the West, due partly to tropical conditions which amplify the risks of infection.

Local doctors say affluence and urbanisation are leading to reduced exercise and increased consumption of fast food.

Meanwhile, the Xinhua news agency reported Vietnamese government statistics show diabetes has risen 200% in the past decade.

Nearly 6% of the population now has the disease.
