Move to fast-track rebates for liver tests
THE federal government is believed to be fast-tracking an application to provide Medicare rebates for non-invasive liver fibrosis tests as four hepatitis C treatments become available on the PBS this week.
The rebates will cover transient elastography FibroScan diagnosis and monitoring.
There are about 90 FibroScan devices in Australia, mostly in NSW, which reduce the need for liver biopsy in chronic hepatitis patients.
Late last year, the NSW health department bought 10 portable machines that were distributed to health districts throughout the
