Move to strip stem cell providers of Medicare funding
THE health department has moved to prevent providers of unproven stem-cell therapies from accessing Medicare benefits.
A proposed regulation states:
"No MBS item applies to a service mentioned in the item if the service is provided to a patient at the same time, or in connection with, the harvesting, storage, in-vitro processing or injection of non-haematopoietic stem cells."
The RACGP supports the proposal, citing the potential for very sick and vulnerable people to be misled and in some cases harmed
