New guidelines for otitis media

A CAMPAIGN to identify and treat Indigenous children with otitis media using best practice guidelines will be launched next year.

New otitis media guidelines will be widely disseminated by the AGPN, which is developing an awareness campaign to ensure the condition is in the forefront of the minds of health professionals working with Indigenous children. The guidelines will then be followed up with 20 face-to-face training workshops across Australia for GPs, practice nurses and Aboriginal health workers in the first half of 2012.

As well as the workshops, funding for six Medicare Locals to specifically target models of best practice to see how they work on the ground will be made available. The pilot study will look at complementing existing services, as well as incorporating new ones.
