Nothing sells like media-hyped medicine

How many times have I seen a “new medical breakthrough” reported in the media with the payoff line: “If confirmed, researchers say this could lead to a new treatment being available within five years.”

It must be something they include in Health Reporting 101 at the College for Lazy Journalism.

I’ve often wanted to look back at media stories of five years ago and see how many of those positive predictions came true. Very few, I would guess.
