Nurse practitioner PBS prescribing

A NURSE practitioner or midwife can prescribe from a limited inventory of PBS-listed medicines if they:1-3

• are registered under the National Registration Accreditation Scheme, and

• are endorsed as a nurse practitioner by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, or

• are an eligible (notated) midwife qualified to prescribe by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, and

• have a collaborative care agreement with an eligible medical practitioner.

PBS prescribing by authorised midwives and nurse practitioners is contingent on state and territory arrangements and, for the latter, their scope of practice.2,3

Some PBS-listed medicines can only be prescribed by nurse practitioners under certain conditions. These medicines are recognised by the code for continuation therapy only (CTO) or for prescribing within a shared care model (SCM).
