Organ donation rates highest ever
ORGAN donation and transplantation rates in Australia are at the highest levels since national records began, a report shows.
The Mid-Point Implementation Review Report of the National Reform Package, commissioned by the Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing, Catherine King, found Australia’s progress in increasing organ and tissue
donation rates equals or betters that seen in other nations.
This year, until the end of September, 763 Australians received a transplant from 254 deceased organ donors, representing a 12% increase in transplant recipients and an 11% increase in the number of deceased organ donors
compared to 2010.
This builds on the much lauded 2010 figures, the first full year of implementing the National Reform Agenda, when Australia’s deceased organ donors rose 25% to 309 from 2009, with a 17% increase in transplant recipients
benefiting 931 patients.
