Oscar winner delves into depths of humanity - In a Better World (MA15+)
THIS recent Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film is from Danish director Susanne Bier, whose work with screenwriter Anders Thomas Jensen has included such fine films as After the Wedding and Brothers.
Their concerns are humanist, focusing on intimate questions of morality and integrity. In a Better World continues these themes.
It’s set in two vastly different areas of the world. Anton (Mikael Persbrandt), who is Swedish, is a doctor who does stints in a refugee camp in Africa, where he’s faced with patients with horrific injuries. The local warlord likes to take bets on the sex of unborn babies, cutting open the pregnant mothers to settle the question. Anton grimly works to save the young women.
Back in Denmark, he lives separately from his wife, Marianne (Trine Dyrholm), who is also a doctor.
