Overhaul pokies laws to reduce gambling harm, experts say

FORTY Australian public health figures are strongly backing a proposed Government clampdown on poker machines, which they label the “overwhelming cause of gambling harm in Australia”.

In a letter to Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott and other key parliamentarians, the group calls for the rapid introduction of “low-impact” poker machines and a mandatory pre-commitment system.

The mandatory pre-commitment scheme would enable people to cap their gambling spend per session, while the low-impact machines could reduce the amount able to be lost per hour to about $150.
