Patient not guilty of stabbing attack on doctor

A MELBOURNE man who stabbed and slashed his former neurosurgeon in a frenzied attack in a hospital foyer has been found not guilty on the basis of mental impairment.

Kareem Al-Salami, 49, screamed "bastard I kill you" as he set upon Dr Michael Wong with a 19cm blade at Melbourne's Western General Hospital in February last year.

Dr Wong, who was arriving for work, sustained life-threatening injuries and only survived because he was treated so quickly, the Victorian Supreme Court heard.
