Patients in denial about codeine habits


People who start taking OTC codeine analgesics for back pain and headaches are ending up in hospital with overdose-related toxicity after becoming dependent and taking almost 30 tablets daily, a review shows.

In findings that appear to justify the impending up-scheduling of codeine products , researchers at the University of South Australia say many patients remain in denial about their overuse of codeine-containing analgesics even after being repeatedly hospitalised for problems related to chronic overdosing.
