Provider number fiasco: 15,000 in backlog as GPs left in limbo

MEDICARE'S provider number system was already in crisis with a backlog of as many as 15,000 numbers awaiting issue when a massive number of  GP registrars were left in the lurch, Medical Observer has learnt. 

The government has blamed last year’s shift to new training providers for bungles which caused hundreds of registrars across the country to start the 2016 training year without provider numbers, leaving them unable to work. 

But doctors say any handover issues were well flagged and problems stem more from institutional neglect
