Religion and medicine: Keeping the faith or violating boundaries?

I feel I must respond to the recent article by Dr Arthur Lazarus, ‘Keeping the faith: religion and medicine can make good bedfellows’.
I know it is published as an opinion piece, but it is a truly unscientific article, incompatible with modern medicine, and nudges on boundary violation.
The author is an American psychiatrist who believes in a god-based religion and says that more than half of Americans want their doctors to speak to them about the spiritual aspects of healthcare.
Really?
