The shame job
FOR Italians it’s quella brutta malattia – ‘that horrible illness’. In English it’s ‘The Big C’, and there is no corresponding word in Indigenous vocabulary. In all languages and cultures there’s a reluctance to speak of cancer.
Compound this innate fear of the disease with a screening test that many find embarrassing, tricky to use (described by one ministerial spokesman as ‘quite a little stunt’) and in some cases shameful, and a picture begins to emerge of why there has been such an alarmingly low uptake of the National Bowel Cancer Screening
