Siri dishing out potentially fatal medical advice

Virtual assistants are no replacement for doctors, study concludes

Siri and Alexa aren’t deliberately trying to kill you, but their medical advice can be deadly.


That’s the conclusion of a US study published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research, in which 54 patients turned to virtual assistants Siri, Alexa or Google Assistant for help for 394 medical dilemmas.

In most cases, the computerised voices responded to the questions with a variation of: “I’m not sure I understood that.”

Alexa responded with “task failure” 92% of the time.
