Testosterone PBS listing changes

From 1 March 2015, restriction changes to all dosage forms and indications of testosterone mean GPs can no longer prescribe PBS-subsidised testosterone without a referral to a specialist.1

The annual PBS expenditure on testosterone increased 4.5-fold between 1992 and 2010.2 The changes to the PBS listings of testosterone were prompted by concern expressed by the Drug Utilisation Sub-Committee of the PBAC that a proportion of this increase may have reflected use outside the intended PBS restriction.3
