TGA warning on fracture risk with excess thyroxine
The latest Medicines Safety Update from the TGA highlights the change in PI for Eutroxsig and Oroxine (Aspen), citing two large studies finding an association between high or excessive doses of thyroxine and fracture.
Patients should be prescribed the lowest dose necessary to achieve a response, with elderly patients’ doses adjusted according to serum TSH levels, it says.
Fracture risk may be higher in patients with osteoporosis risk factors including postmenopausal women, smokers and individuals with a family history of osteoporosis or vitamin D deficiency.
